Unrepentant bigots of Cliff’s ilk are having the best of both worlds: they had it good under apartheid and they continue to thrive in our democracy, writes Fred Khumalo.

I was conceived in the back room where my mother lived as a domestic worker on white people’s property.

As a result, my parents had to spend a lot of money for my transportation between my township and the city, a two-hour train ride each way. That, Gareth Cliff, is structural racism. It is the lived experience of millions of black people in this country. It is not anecdotal. That is what Rakhivhane was trying to communicate to Cliff and Steenhuisen. But they were not prepared to listen.Black people must get over racism and move on.Many people expressed shock at Cliff’s utterances. I was not shocked. This is vintage Cliff.

The debate about race and freedom of speech did not come into play. In purely legal terms, the ruling made sense. In this country, the promotion of racism is a crime – therefore denying that racism exists is an assault on those who experience it.I guess the question each one of us must ask is: Does the celebration of freedom of speech not impinge on the human rights and dignity of others?
