VSO Music Director Otto Tausk has programmed Igor Stravinsky’s great shocker Le sacre du printemps, plus other new works.
For March 10–12, VSO Music Director Otto Tausk has programmed Igor Stravinsky’s great shocker Le Sacre du Printemps , plus new works by Vancouver-based composers. Rodney Sharman, the Symphony’s first composer-in-residence, returns with After Schumann, a work which should complement Robert Schumann’s lovely Spring Symphony. Also on the program is Bloom by Rita Ueda, featuring Miyama McQueen-Tokita on koto.
Three of Mazzoli’s works — In Spite of All This, Ecstatic Science, and Violent, Violent Sea — will be performed by a cadre of VSO musicians, together with two works by Di Castri, TIMET.–I.–M.–E and Phonotopographie. VSO past associate conductor Andrew Crust, currently music director of the Lima Symphony Orchestra in Ohio, leads the celebration.
Circling back to the notorious premiere, many Stravinsky experts now wonder which shocked the Paris audience more, Stravinsky’s score or Vaslav Nijinsky’s eccentric choreography? No matter: shock it did.Article content In a post called Kitchen Sink Orchestration, blogger Matthew Yasner writes, “A reasonable estimate of the size of the required orchestra for a concert performance is roughly 100 performers. One wonders how Schubert and Beethoven might have reacted to The Rite — a reasonable but ultimately futile speculation. The truth is that Stravinsky seemed to be simultaneously an iconoclast and a member of his generation.
