Signs of improvement as city crews address growing encampments in Ballard that have been the site of multiple shootings and fires.
This photo shows city crews cleaning up an illegal encampment in Seattle's Ballard neighborhood on the afternoon of Oct. 26, 2023. After months of outreach and connecting residents there with transitional housing, city crews started the removal process Thursday morning at the encampments along 14th Avenue NW and NW Leary Way.
City officials have been telling us for months the Unified Care Team has been working with the people living here, and crews have been doing RV remediation multiple times in the past year. “For the first time in the three years I’ve been doing this, I’ve actually seen them do the necessary outreach, gaining the trust with the individuals, making the connection, finding out what they needed in terms of viable transitional housing,” Bruce Drager with Greenlake Homeless Advocates said.
