A Chinese startup has developed a miniature nuclear battery capable of powering a smartphone for 50 years without requiring recharging. Termed as the world's "first miniaturised atomic energy system," the nuclear battery works with 63 nuclear isotopes compactly arranged within a casing smaller than a coin. Betavolt scientists used nickel-63 as an energy source and diamond semiconductors to convert decay energy into electrical current using a thin crystal semiconductor.
Betavolt also claims the battery emits no radiation and is suitable for medical devices like pacemakers and hearing aids. After decay, it transforms into a stable, non-radioactive copper isotope. Envisioning a future where 'mobile phones never need to be charged and drones can fly forever', the company hopes to produce a battery with 1 watt of power by 2025. The small size of these batteries also allows for multiple units to be connected, increasing the power output.
