Overall for the 2022 municipal elections in Ottawa, there are 14 candidates for mayor, 106 for city council and 75 for school boards.
The window to submit mayor and council nomination papers closed Friday at 2 p.m. without a filing from the current city councillor for College ward.
The College ward seat will be contested by Laine Johnson, Granda Kopytko, Wendy Davidson, Pat McGarry and Delvas Vilteau, in order of nomination filing. Johnson, on leave from a director role at Centretown Citizens Ottawa Corporation, released a statement after the news of Chiarelli’s non-participation in the race.
“I’m interested in the democratic process. I think it’s fun. I think it’s interesting. And I think it’s awesome that anyone who lives in the city has a fair chance of having a say in this government. And I think, if you don’t take advantage of that, you’re kind of missing an opportunity if you feel like you can actually make a change.”
Bruce Faulkner had prepared his nomination papers Friday, intending to run in one of the single-candidate races. “I believe there’s no councillor that should be re-elected, not with this record,” he said, pointing to the municipal debt and housing crisis as issues facing Ottawa.Article content
