The Esports World Cup (EWC) is adding chess to its 2025 lineup, marking a significant crossover between traditional and esports. The tournament will leverage Chess.com's platform and feature the Champions Chess Tour (CCT) as the primary qualification pathway.

The Esports World Cup ( EWC ) announced a surprising new addition to its 2025 lineup: Chess . The game will join other titles in the glitzy and well-funded tournament, aiming to showcase the best of the global esports scene. The Esports World Cup Foundation ( EWC F) and Chess .com have partnered for a multi-year agreement, leveraging Chess .com's vast platform (nearly 200 million members) and reaching out to renowned players like Magnus Carlsen.

The Champions Chess Tour (CCT), a popular rapid-fire chess tournament, will become the primary qualification pathway for the EWC championship. Two events in February and May 2025, with a combined $300,000 prize pool and a spot in the finals, will be held. Matches will be played in the rapid 10+0 format, where players have ten minutes to make all moves. Tied matches will go to an Armageddon decider, favoring the white player with more time but allowing the black player to win with a draw. 'Bringing chess, a game that has been played for 1,500 years, to the Esports World Cup is a truly exciting moment,' said Ralf Reichert, CEO of EWCF. 'It’s the perfect example of how games evolve: From boards to screens, the core competition stays the same. Chess's rich history, global appeal, and thriving competitive scene make it a perfect fit for our mission to unite the world's most popular games and their passionate communities under one competitive umbrella.
