Ding Liren blunders in final game

India’s Gukesh Dommaraju has become the youngest ever world chess champion at just 18 years of age, breaking the record set by the legendary Garry Kasparov in 1985 by four years. The Chennai teenager defeated China’s Ding Liren, who had held the crown for a year, by 7.5-6.5 in their closely fought $2.5mn match in Singapore. Nine of their 14 games were drawn, and there was never more than a point between them.

Carlsen remains world No1 in classical chess, but is now more interested in the World Rapid and World Blitz , where he will defend his crowns on Wall Street at the end of December. The final stages of the match in Singapore were tense and dramatic, as the two contenders stepped up their efforts. After a run of seven draws in a row, they traded wins in games 11 and 12, both with the favourable white pieces.
