Houston’s repeated references to Churchill as the “former health minister” were particularly cutting. That’s because Houston’s jabs were clearly designed to remind voters of the new Liberal leader’s frontbench role in a government widely seen to have allowed the province’s long-documented challenges in health care to spiral into a full-blown crisis. Remember, it was dissatisfaction with health care that largely drove the electorate to fire the Liberal government only one year ago.
Angela Simmonds, on the other hand, likely would have left Tory strategists scratching their heads wondering how to drive a contrast between Houston and a fresh, new Liberal opponent. Unlike Churchill, Simmonds represented a clear break from the former government and the baggage that came along with it. As a leadership candidate, Simmonds brought new perspectives to Nova Scotia politics, focusing on “experience in life, and being able to relate to Nova Scotians.
