Francis joined Rangers as part of Graeme Souness' revolution in 1987
Scottish football stars have spoken of their sadness at the death of former Rangers player Trevor Francis. The Englishman, who became Britain's first million pound player when he joined Brian Clough's Nottingham Forest in 1979, signed on at Ibrox in 1987.
"Thoughts and prayers go out to his family," Mark Walters Tweeted: "RIP Trevor Francis. Had the pleasure to play and get to know him at Glasgow Rangers as we traveled into training together as we all lived in Bothwell before he left for management. Great player great man". "Real ability, real talent, and a nice guy as well. When I got the news that he'd passed away, obviously comes as a shock because I'm three or four years older than Trevor. My condolences certainly go out to his family. This is one of the game's nice guys."
And scores of Rangers fans also paid their respects to the playmaker, who cost the Light Blues just £75,000 and stayed for one season before moving south to Queens Park Rangers, where he later became player-manager. Ross Wilkins, son of Ray Wilkins, Tweeted a pic of his dad and Francis from an AC Milan v Sampdoria match, when the Gers teammates were opponents. He said: "Sad news to hear of Trevor Francis passing today. Thoughts are with his family."
A third said: "Two wonderful players I had the absolute pleasure of watching play for the Famous Glasgow Rangers, sadly gone but will never be forgotten!"
