Celtic legend Billy McNeill's son calls for dementia in footballers to be classed as industrial injury

Celtic legend Billy McNeill’s son has backed a campaign to classify brain injuries caused by heading the ball as an industrial injury.

A 2019 study by Glasgow University professor Willie Stewart found ex-footballers were around three-and-a-half times more likely to die of neurodegenerative brain disease. It led to dozens of Scottish football legends, including Sir Alex Ferguson, to back a campaign by Labour MSP Michael urging the Scottish Government to act.“Our dad’s life was football. He loved everything about it and we are sure he would not have changed anything.

Amanda Kopel, widow of Frank, who died in 2014 after a battle with vascular dementia, said: “The evidence has proven beyond doubt that former players are suffering as they are due to their time in the game. Each new study simply reflects and adds to the growing evidence that has been around for some years now.

“None of the players from Frankie’s era were millionaires, it can’t be right that they spend decades entertaining all of us and are then left to struggle along with their loved ones. “Alex had a good career in the game, winning the league with Dundee in the early 60s and coming close to winning the Scottish Cup against Rangers just a few years later.
