This is my mission for Capital ward: that we all thrive.

Some Ottawa council candidates say they want to fight for our city. I take a different view. I think that when you go out looking for a fight, that’s exactly what you get: a battle. We can survive battles, but we suffer through, and from, them. I take a different approach by training, experience and inclination.Sign up to receive daily headline news from the Ottawa SUN, a division of Postmedia Network Inc.

The past term of council was marked by combativeness and dysfunction. Since amalgamation, we have been facing a large group of councillors whose wards are differently positioned, with the suburban and urban wards all feeling like they are denied their fair share. The acrimony and fighting between factions within city council is understandable given the wards’ different interests but it also took energy and got in the way of effective results.

Without casting blame on anyone in particular, on seeing this dysfunction via Zoom by watching city council meetings online, I realized that my training in mediation, negotiation and conflict resolution positions me well to bring value and creative problem-solving to the council table.

My mission in running for council is to bring my conflict-resolution training and passion for fair process to the council table as representative for Capital so we don’t only survive but thrive. We can do hard things together. We can solve complex problems in creative ways that serve us all. I hope to earn your vote on election day and that we can thrive together going forward.
