Cape Town is inviting public feedback on a new plan designed to make walking and cycling safer, more accessible, and central to the City’s transportation future,As the City’s population is expected to grow to 5.8 million by 2040, pressure on its transport systems will intensify. Historically, Cape Town has focused on private car use, leading to heavy congestion, pollution, and rising traffic fatalities.

Rob Quintas, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, noted that current infrastructure does not adequately support pedestrians and cyclists. ‘Walking is still the primary mode of transport for many lower-income households, while cycling offers a healthy and affordable alternative. However, both face obstacles due to fragmented networks and limited accessibility,’ said Quintas.

The draft strategy includes plans for targeted investments to improve pedestrian and cycling infrastructure. A key objective is to establish safe, continuous pathways near public transport hubs and along high-demand routes. The proposal suggests measures such as pedestrian-only zones and cycle highways, which aim to reduce car dependency, enhance road safety, and improve mobility for all residents.

Additionally, the strategy highlights the importance of partnerships to increase awareness and promote safety for vulnerable road users. Over time, the goal is to reshape transport planning, making walking, cycling, and public transport the preferred options, while reducing reliance on private vehicles. This vision aligns with the City’s long-term ambition to create a people-focused urban environment where active mobility plays a central role in daily life.
