MacKinnon was named the Coal Bowl Classic most valuable player following the 1987 tournament and later that year was named the school’s athlete of the year. Along with being on the executive for the New Waterford Minor Baseball Association, MacKinnon is also a driving force behind the thriving elementary school basketball program at Greenfield Elementary School in River Ryan.
He played for the Breton Education Centre’s high school team for grades 9-12. During those years, Walzak was a two-time first-team all-star at the New Waterford Coal Bowl Classic. Once the season was over, UCCB once again recruited Walzak — but this time it was for their hockey team where he spent two years playing forward.He tried out with Team Canada’s under-18 baseball team, was captain of the Nova Scotia team at the Canada Summer Games in Saskatoon, Sask., and the University of Toledo offered him a Division 1 baseball scholarship in Ohio.
