Donald McNeil, president of the #20 Dam Fishing Association, claims the Glace Bay dam and water are toxic, based on microbiology tests he and his group had done this past summer. IAN NATHANSON/CAPE BRETON POSTGLACE BAY — A dispute is heating up between a Glace Bay fishing group and a Cape Breton non-profit environmental organization, and tying in a local MLA and the Cape Breton Regional Municipality over what’s being described as alleged toxicity in the water of a community dam.

In correspondence provided to the Post, McNeil said the municipality, who at least two people mentioned owned the dam and waterway, as well as Jeff McNeil , president of the Port Morien Wildlife Association, went on the offensive over Donald McNeil and the #20 dam group’s claimed declarations that the dam showed signs of toxicity in the water.

Test results shown in correspondence from Bureau Veritas, a testing, inspection and certification group with an office in Sydney, showed fecal coliform results greater than 2,500 CFU /100 millilitres. According to water analysis technologies site Palintest, non-governmental organization guidelines “suggest that 10 to 100 CFU per 100 mL is tolerable for short periods of time, but above 100 CFU per 100 mL the risk to life is too great.

Furthermore, he also alleges he is being defamed by Donald McNeil and his group for falsely accusing the non-profit of purportedly dumping raw sewage into the #20 Dam and making it unsafe for locals visiting the dam area. Donald McNeil refuted Jeff McNeil’s claims, saying his group only put up one sign: “Danger Water Tested Toxiz No Fishing.”
