Cory Keeping at Emera Centre Northside, where he worked as the arena's general manager for nine years. Keeping died on Friday after a months-long battle with cancer. CONTRIBUTED/WHITE PHOTOGRAPHYI felt compelled to comment on our community experiencing the recent passing of four Northsiders – Roger Tobin, Brian Ferguson, ‘Skipper’ Gordon and Cory Keeping – all within weeks, if not days of each other.

I came to see him later in life at running races and had fleeting conversations with him, often at the grocery store. Without speaking of it, each knowing we both turned out OK. I’m led to believe he was well-liked at work. Brian had a clear vision about developing an Atlantic Memorial Park in Sydney Mines in honour our coal miners, merchant mariners, veterans and a long ago Mi’kmaw settlement in the area. He confidently unscrolled large area maps and showed me various documents and plans. He had a steadfast commitment to this massive project that came from an authentic place. Fortunately, he got to see that project get off to a solid start and I’m confident his visionary colleague Cyril Aker will see it through.

Like most, I knew of Cory as a supporter of hockey and a prominent local musician. But I later had the good fortune of sitting across from him in his role as manager at the Emera Center and having lengthy phone conversations and email exchanges. I knew I was in conversation with an honourable person. He had that way of someone who genuinely cared about making his community better. Except he was not looking for votes or public credit.
