Canadians are feeling more vulnerable to fraudsters and identity theft than ever before, according to a new survey that shows that most are taking steps to fight back.

, found that as many as 97 per cent of Canadians surveyed feel vulnerable to fraud.

Fraud Prevention Month is an annual campaign meant to help Canadians recognize, reject and report fraud, according to the Government of Canada.?' will help Canadians recognize the increasingly sophisticated tricks and tools scammers use to entrap victims,” the federal government says.

Limiting the use of public Wi-Fi , checking their credit reports , and installing or updating security software on their computers were other steps Canadians have taken, according to the survey.When it comes to social media, respondents said Facebook specifically raises red flags, with 42 per cent believing it poses the highest risk of fraud.

The survey results suggested people in Quebec significantly feel less vulnerable to many types of fraud, when compared to those in the rest of Canada. Most respondents believe that penalties for identity theft and fraud should be increased, and 86 per cent said the government should do a better job of educating people on how to protect their personal data.
