Valour looked to have opened the scoring in the first half as former Wanderer Alessandro Riggi found an opening and trickled a shot through Oxner’s legs. But as the ball was about to cross the line, Valour forward William Akio inexplicably kicked the ball away from the goal. The teams were deadlocked 0-0 at the half.

The visitors had a couple dangerous opportunities in the Valour box but couldn’t capitalize. Alex Marshall had the best scoring chance for the Wanderers but his shot from outside the box was steered aside by a diving Valour keeper Jonathan Sirois. The Wanderers – who were coming off a 10-day rest since their previous match – were missing a key element in their attack. Forward Samuel Salter, who’s tied for third in league scoring with a team-leading five goals, was suspended for the match after picking up a red card in the Wanderers’ last match, a 2-0 home loss to Atletico Ottawa on June 30.
