Canadian doctors are collectively spending 18.5 million hours on “unnecessary paperwork and administrative tasks” each year, a report says.

, a report by the Canadian Federation of Independent Business released Monday, states the approximately 18.5 million hours physicians are collectively spending on unnecessary paperwork amounts to 55.6 million patient visits per year.

Examples of unnecessary paperwork include “lengthy and redundant forms and processes” as well as “time consuming tasks” such as “filling out overly complicated paperwork for insurance companies.” Ontario would benefit most from a significant reduction in physician red tape, the report said. It estimated Ontario’s physician administrative burden to be the equivalent to 20.6 million patient visits.

The province has said it will shorten or eliminate specific forms and streamline outdated processes to save physicians’ time, among other measures to help meet its goal.
