Canadian co-founder of the organization connecting people with intellectual disabilities carried out abuse over seven decades, a 900-page report says.
The Canadian co-founder of renowned international organization L’Arche has been found to have sexually abused at least 25 women, aJean Vanier, who died in 2019, was subject to a years-long independent investigation by researchers whose report said he exploited people looking for spiritual guidance for sexual purposes.
A “microsystem” around the two men was where the abuse was carried out, the report says. No one with an intellectual disability was found to have been abused, it added. It was limited to the “sectarian nucleus” around Philippe and Vanier. “Twenty-five women of legal age, single, married or consecrated, and without disabilities, were identified as having experienced, at some point in their relationship with Jean Vanier, a situation involving a sexual act or an intimate gesture between 1952 and 2019,” a press release from L’Arche International said.
Nuns and young women became victims through what Philippe deemed “graces” — meaning bizarre sexual practices he adhered to. Vanier is “initiated to his spiritual father’s sexual practices and the development of his leadership qualities as the new head of L’Eau vive” during the 1950s, the report continues.
