Denys Shmyhal will meet with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland, Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly and Defence Minister Anita Anand for a one-day visit.
OTTAWA — Canada will announce new military aid for Ukraine, details of financial support and new sanctions on Russia and Belarus as Ukraine’s Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal arrives in Toronto Tuesday amid tight security and a furor over leaked U.S. intelligence documents.
Canadian officials refuse to comment on the documents, or on any discussions with U.S. officials about their validity or implications, or to comment on a Globe and Mail report the documents say pro-Russian hackers disrupted a Canadian natural gas pipeline. The documents, according to the Associated Press, detail U.S. training and equipment schedules to support Ukraine, assessments of losses, what the U.S. is monitoring on key allies and strategic partners, and what moves Russia may be taking to undermine those relationships.
A senior government official speaking on a background-only basis said Trudeau will provide more detail about that financial support for Ukraine on Tuesday. Liberal MP Yan Baker, who represents Etobicoke Centre, said in an interview after last month’s budget, said he was not disappointed there weren’t more details or substantive new military aid announcements, saying Canada’s track record was “strong.”
