A slow start to the week doesn\u0027t matter now with Brad Gushue\u0027s foursome having a shot at the title on Sunday.
The Gushue rink has written a compelling story this week, rallying from some shaky early outings to find its best game as amid rising pressure and intensity. Earlier Saturday, Canada advanced to the semifinals with a stunning 9-1 win over four-time reigning world champion Sweden in a qualifier.
The Canada-Swiss classic was a back-and-forth affair, with the crowd breaking out into “Gushue-Gushue” chants throughout. The fans were on their feet in the sixth end, when Gushue executed a brilliant takeout that threaded the needle between guard stones on the left and right. It was a similar scene to Friday, when the crowd at TD Place was on its feet in appreciation of the Canadian effort.
While Canada’s recovery from a slow start has been well-documented, Switzerland quietly went about its business, rolling on and on to an 11-1 record in the round-robin, best of the lot. The lone loss came to Italy, but along the way the Swiss also gained confidence by knocking off all the other potential championship contenders, including Scotland, Norway and Sweden.: Amid all the excitement and energy of having Canada in the semifinal was how fast and how decisively Sweden left the picture.
