The broadly positive inspection report pointed out a key weakness in the location of the prison's Segregation and Reintegration Unit

Fresh pressure has been put on the Scottish Prison Service to find a solution to noise issues emanating from HMP Stirling after an inspection revealed the placing of a unit as a “major design flaw”.

The location of the unit so close to nearby homes on the Forth Park estate has caused regular complaints over noise levels from the prison – with some locals subjected to “incessant” noise and some children forced to wear noise-cancelling headphones to sleep. Clackmannanshire and Dunblane MSP Keith Brown – who covers the prison – said: “Firstly, there are many positive aspects of the report that SPS and local staff must be commended for.

Mid Scotland and Fife MSP Alexander Stewart said: “Whilst I accept and welcome the positives in this first anniversary report; I am also relieved that it has identified this ‘major design flaw’ and that there can be no escaping the gravity of the effect it has had on the local community. “What is important now is that changes are implemented quickly and that residents can return to their previous lives. I have seen close up the effect that the disturbances have had on local residents over the last year.

Ms Angus said: “We have been working hard on the issue of noise and SPS aims to be a good neighbour. We do understand the impact that noises can have and the disruption it can have for others.
