Ayr FBU Branch, which represents 60 members working at Ayr Community Fire Station, have said new social security powers must be used to “full effect” to provide proper compensation and protection for affected firefighters.

Members of the Fire Brigade Union Ayr branch, who were involved in tackling the devastating Station Hotel fire on Monday night, have demanded Ministers categorise cancers as ‘industrial diseases’ for firefighters.

In January 2023 a peer reviewed study published by the University of Central Lancashire found that Scottish firefighters die from cancers at a younger age, compared to the general population. Ayr Branch Secretary Kerry McCrone said: “Cancers amongst firefighters are industrial diseases, and far too many colleagues are at risk of carcinogenic contamination every day.

“The Scottish Government must back this bill, use its new powers and deliver a council that has firefighter voices at the heart of the new benefit.”
