Calgary mosquitoes unleash summer feeding frenzy yyc
The city’s tally of mosquitoes this summer confirms what many have suspected: all that itching and scratching indicates the blood-sucking insects are having a banner summer.
Calgary was deluged with 130 millimetres of rain in June, followed by a wet early July leaving plenty of standing water — and then a heat wave that’s brought forth swarms of hatchlings.“Those eggs can be adult mosquitoes looking for blood within 24 hours and even the warmer overnight temperatures keep that rate quicker,” she said.
It’s always possible rainfall will hatch dormant eggs laid on the edges of standing water in previous years, as this summer already has, said the city pest manager.Last weekend, city officials sprayed bacterial larvicide from helicopters on areas in and around the city known to be active mosquito breeding areas.
