It’s the program’s 25th year and Stephanie Sacks has been chair of the Calgary chapter of Na’amat Canada — a Jewish women’s group that organizes the yearly initiative — since year one, spearheading efforts to fill hundreds of backpacks annually and co-ordinating with city women’s shelters and homeless agencies.Sign up to receive daily headline news from the Calgary Herald, a division of Postmedia Network Inc.

Those backpacks are filled with essentials such as notebooks, calculators and water bottles, vital supplies for children who often leave abusive situations with nothing more than the clothes on their backs. “Very often school supplies are left behind, or if they are left behind and they try to get them, the abuser is so angry that they pretty much destroy anything. And then the child is faced with being in a new place, with new teachers in a new school and a new classroom, and they can walk in without a backpack or basic supplies.”Article content

“This means that our kids can go to school and not stand out as the kids who don’t have backpacks,” said Avenue 15’s Melissa Morrison, who said the shelter houses about 25 youths per night, with 150 to 170 served over the course of a year. Those include a mix of children with or without parents or guardians who seek shelter.
