Kaisen Sushi, known for fast service and fresh, inexpensive rolls, has quietly closed after five years in San Francisco.

storefront, informed customers that the business located at 71 5th St. was “permanently closing soon.” The owner, who is listed by the California Secretary of State's office as Adisorn Khamtalob, shared that the closure wasn’t the outcome he had hoped for.

“We have provided high-quality Japanese foods in community area for 5 years and been an enthusiastic part of City of San Francisco, but with the Lease Agreement Renew Issued that we expected to get renew from the landlord promised in 2017, in term of 10 more years ... We failed in negotiating under the landlord’s expectation manner and supporting,” the goodbye message read in part.

Khamtalob added that the pandemic had created a financial blow and made it challenging to operate his restaurant. Despite being approved for the COVID-19 Rent Relief program, Khamtalob said that the additional monetary support couldn’t meet his landlord’s “qualification and expectation.”Madeline Wells/ SFGATE

Next to Khamtalob’s message was another flyer that revealed Kaisen Sushi’s sudden departure was the result of an eviction issued by YHB Hospitality Group, which owns the historic Pickwick Hotel in San Francisco. Kaisen Sushi, which was located at the street level of the Pickwick Hotel, effectively vacated the premises on June 22 at 6:01 a.m., according to the notice.

Kaisen Sushi will be remembered best as a no-fuss and budget-friendly sushi restaurant that delighted the lunch crowd before the pandemic. Guests could count on finding plenty of inexpensive sushi rolls, like the spicy tuna, for under $10. The restaurant also offered larger entrees that included hot ramen bowls and salmon teriyaki, among others.
