Bruce Springsteen’s new covers album is hardly revolutionary ⭐ ⭐ ⭐

is back with an album of soul covers, and he sounds very at home in this selection of classics. The standout is “The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Anymore”, which is surely to be expected given the source material . It’s a wall-of-sound homage, and surprisingly festive in feel given that it’s an absolutely devastating song.

Springsteen’s voice emanates warmth and good feeling. You sense that he’s having a good time with these songs. They are not revolutionary covers; he hasn’t uncovered any new dimension to any of the songs but his voice is smooth and limber as he croons his way through. The one possible exception is “Nightshift”, which in Springsteen’s hands is a very Springsteeny song – the popular version by the Commodores is a smooth, louche little number but here it’s got a bit of that rough New Jersey melancholy coupled with jazzy sax and haunted “oooh”s in the background.

What is perplexing about this album is that Bruce Springsteen has not made a Bruce Springsteen album: it is faithful to its source material almost to a fault, leaning into the sounds of the 60s. I can’t help but feel that a better album would have been one on which he turns these soul classics into something only he could have made, adding grit and motion and a pair of old worn-out jeans.
