Britain said on Thursday it would rejoin the European Union's flagship Horizon science research programme, ending a two-year post-Brexit standoff with the bloc over science funding.

The agreement, which excludes the EU's Euratom nuclear research scheme, signals a further improvement in bilateral relations seven months after a row over trade was resolved.

Sunak's office said Britain would also associate with the European earth observation programme Copernicus, but not with the EU's Euratom programme, instead choosing to pursue a domestic fusion energy strategy. The EU blocked Britain's participation because of a row over post-Brexit trade rules governing Northern Ireland, but February's resolution of that dispute opened the door to Britain rejoining Horizon Europe.

Atomic-scale spin-optical laser: New horizon for optoelectronic devicesAtomic-scale spin-optical laser: New horizon for optoelectronic devicesResearchers at the Technion—Israel Institute of Technology have developed a coherent and controllable spin-optical laser based on a single atomic layer. This discovery is enabled by coherent spin-dependent interactions between a single atomic layer and a laterally confined photonic spin lattice, the latter of which supports high-Q spin-valley states through the photonic Rashba-type spin splitting of a bound state in the continuum.
