Her singing career started when she was a child, singing for tourists with her mother. Fassie’s first performance was standing in for an artist in the band Joy. Soon others noticed her singing voice. She shot to international fame, recording songs like Weekend Special.Ag Shame Lovey released in 1987.Brenda won five South African Music Awards, including Best African Artist.
She is also famous for songs like Black President, recorded before Nelson Mandela’s release. Her song repertoire crossed boundaries, making her a famous and beloved South African artist. A cover of the song ‘I’m So Sorry’ appeared in the movie Tsotsi, and was performed by her son: Bongani Fassie.The song released the following year, part of the album with the same name.
