The South African Blitzboks, gearing up for the Vancouver leg of the World Sevens Series, welcome back Sebastiaan Jobb and Tristan Leyds. Jobb makes a return after nearly two years, while Leyds rejoins the squad after recovering from a hand injury. Coach Philip Snyman believes these additions will strengthen the team's performance against formidable opponents like New Zealand, Ireland, and Australia.
The Blitzboks are set for a crucial boost ahead of the Vancouver leg of the World Sevens Series with the return of Sebastiaan Jobb after almost two years and the inclusion of Tristan Leyds . The duo were called up to the Blitzbok squad for the fourth tournament of the 2024-25 season by head coach Philip Snyman , who named his 13-player group on Thursday.
Jobb replaces the injured Zain Davids, while Leyds steps in as playmaker for Dewald Human, who participated in the squad that finished fourth in Perth last month. Jobb made his debut in Hong Kong in 2023 and played in Singapore a week later, marking his only two appearances to date. Leyds, on the other hand, had a stellar performance for the Blitzboks in their tournament victory in Cape Town in December before sustaining a hand injury that sidelined him for the Perth tournament. The Blitzboks have a history of success in Vancouver, winning at BC Place in 2019 and 2021. Snyman expressed confidence that these changes will lead to similar results. 'Both Tristan and Sebastiaan will add to the dynamics of the squad and I know they will be very competitive in their pool matches against New Zealand, Ireland and Australia,' he said. 'Sebastiaan's inclusion is well deserved as he worked very hard over the last couple of months. In fact, he was already close to selection for the Olympic Games last year. He was unlucky with untimely injuries over the last couple of seasons, but he is ready to play.' The 25-year-old Jobb has previously played for the Junior Springboks and the Vodacom Bulls in the Currie Cup. Snyman highlighted that Jobb's selection to replace Davids, a forward, indicates a tactical shift for the Canada event. 'We will play on an artificial pitch, where the game will be faster, and Sebastiaan's pace will be a huge factor.' The Blitzbok coach is also enthusiastic about the energy and skill that Leyds brings to the team. 'He had two very good outings in Dubai and Cape Town and slotted right back in. Tristan comes in for Dewald Human, who has now played three tournaments on the trot and deserves a bit of a rest.' The Blitzboks' squad for Vancouver is as follows: Ryan Oosthuizen, Impi Visser (co-captain), Ricardo Duarttee, Ronald Brown, Selvyn Davids (co-captain), Siviwe Soyizwapi, Shilton van Wyk, Quewin Nortje, Donavan Don, Sebastiaan Jobb, David Brits, Zander Reynders, Tristan Leyds
