The 43-page report outlined how “historical issues” around migration to Britain has also contributed to widening the gap in the labour market. Migrant workers were more likely to face unemployment due to being over-represented in “lockdown-hit” sectors during the pandemic such as hospitality and were more likely to have been working on insecure and temporary contracts.
“As we emerge from a pandemic, record breaking inflation is putting pressure on already squeezed household budgets and this will be felt most sharply by the 4.8 million people in low paid jobs. Workers from minority ethnic groups make up a disproportionately high number of those in low paid and insecure jobs and are also more likely to be in poverty,” she said.
