At least 8 Notts pubs will take part
Wetherspoon pubs across Nottinghamshire are to cut the price of all food and drink by 7.5 per cent - but it's just for one day. The reduction on Thursday, September 15, is to highlight the benefit of a permanent VAT reduction in the hospitality industry.
Prices at the pubs will be reduced to mark Tax Equality Day. It means a customer spending £10 will be charged £9.25. Pubs taking part in Nottinghamshire include The Roebuck Inn in St. James's Street, The Joseph Else in South Parade, Lloyds No. 1 Bar and in Carlton Street and The Gooseberry Bush in Peel Street. Also joining in are The Free Man, Carlton Hill, Carlton, Trent Bridge Inn in Radcliffe Road, West Bridgford, The Samuel Hall in Mansfield Road, Sherwood and The Admiral Sir John Borlase Warren in Derby Road, Stapleford.All food and drink in pubs is subject to 20 percent VAT.
The Roebuck Inn manager, Alex Darby, said: "It is unfair that supermarkets pay zero VAT on food, but pubs pay 20 percent. Pubs have been under fantastic pressure for decades due to the tax disadvantages it has with supermarkets. "It doesn't make sense for the hospitality industry to subsidise supermarkets. We urge the Chancellor to create tax equality between pubs and supermarkets."
