Chuckwagon fans will recognize the names at the top of the standings heading into the final night of racing at the Cowboys Rangeland Derby.
Thanks to winning the seventh heat in a time of 1:12.89, Kris Molle moved into third place overall and qualified for Sunday’s championship final along with MacGillivray and Bensmiller.
“That was a dream come true winning the Calgary Stampede and that was one of the toughest decisions I’ve ever had to make was turn them down,” said Gorst, who was the defending champion in Lloydminster before finishing fourth in Saturday’s final. “I can live with my decision. I’m happy I did it and I have zero regrets and you can definitely put that in the paper.”
After the COVID-19 pandemic wiped out the 2020 season, Gorst thought he would be defending his title in Calgary the following year, but found out in late May that the 2021 edition of the Rangeland Derby was also cancelled. “They always say that they’re working with the drivers, but they’re not. They’re just putting a pile of rules in that I don’t agree with.”
“I’m sticking up for the young guys. I’m sticking up for the top guys. The four of us didn’t do it for personal reasons. We’re sticking up for the sport.”
