Nutrition book buyers should beware of authors who aren't qualified or are using the book to tout a business. - FileResearchers are warning buyers to read the fine print, particularly when it comes to an author’s qualifications, when browsing the nutrition book aisle.

Cahill and a team of Dalhousie medical and community health students gathered the top 100 bestselling books from Amazon Canada and conducted a search online and at public libraries in Canada. They tabulated the different types of nutritional training-related credentials of the authors and they compared the differences in scientific citations and financial incentives among authors with and without clinical nutrition credentials.

Dr. Leah Cahill, associate professor in the Department of Community Health and Epidemiology at Dalhousie University. - ContributedBeyond the questionable ethics of such books,"this can be dangerous,” Cahill said. “When a patient and a health-care professional write a book together, that is often the most useful advice of all because it’s a patient and a practitioner experience,” Cahill said.
