'Sources suggest that one freight train can remove up to 76 HGVs from the road'
Belfast Council has described as “disappointing” a failure to include the Port of Belfast in a plan for extended rail networks across the island of Ireland.
Regarding new regional connections, the plan in the north would extend the railway into Tyrone, from Portadown to Dungannon, then onto Omagh, Strabane, Derry, and Letterkenny in Donegal. The plan would also develop the railway to boost connectivity in the North Midlands of the island, from Mullingar to Cavan, Monaghan, Armagh and Portadown.
“With a current baseline of having no regular rail freight operations it would seem that with the necessary governments’ commitment and investment there are clear economic and environmental benefits that could be delivered through improved rail freight linkages beyond what is currently proposed in the draft report.”
He added: “But regarding the rail freight, there are no real commodities carried on the rail freight anymore. It would be a big thing to take lorries off the road.”
