Former Ontario Conservative senator Hugh Segal, who in 1998 placed second behind Joe Clark for the leadership of the then-federal Progressive Conservative Party, is unimpressed with Poilievre’s use of wood to woo supporters. “Those pieces of wood may be of some value, but everything else—like existing economic and social policy, agreements like free trade—really aren’t part of anything that he thinks that are worthwhile.
“It’s not about inventing some brand new utopia out of scratch. It’s about reclaiming the freedom that is our natural right.” “For some people, it’s a comforting message about losing control—and this isn’t about going to some place new. It’s about turning back the clock to core principles.” “But it looks like he’s preparing for phase two—if he ends up winning the leadership in positioning himself to appeal to more voters, and that’s why style counts.”
Turnbull said that Poilievre is also “channelling the post-partisan energy” that Ontario Premier Doug Ford uses to promote “Ford Nation for everybody” rather than pushing the provincial PC party for which he serves as leader.
