Stampede honours Hugh Sinclair as a Pioneer of Rodeo yyc

“It’s quite an honour,” said the 55-year-old former reinsman, who has lived in what he calls “the same yard” his entire life in Grande Prairie. “I just wanted to be part of the atmosphere when we came to Calgary. Joe Carbury, it was unbelievable growing up listening to him.”Article content The son of Tom Sinclair, one of the top wagon drivers in the 1970s, ‘Hughie’ actually wanted to follow in his grandfather Hugh’s steps and race standardbred horses.
While others like Kelly and Kirk Sutherland kept racing into their 60s, Sinclair decided to call it a career following the 2013 season. “It was getting tough the last year I raced, everywhere I went there was a flood,” he said. “It was horrible how it flooded here and in High River. Everybody was evacuating and I was like, ‘How come we can’t leave?’ Then some helicopter landed right beside us and said, ‘You’ve got to get out of here.’ ”
