why do people have to be reminded to practise acceptable hygiene? How do they go about this in their private homes?I recently noticed a sign inside our work toilet, which was put up a few weeks ago. It begs everyone who uses the loo to leave it just the way they found it.

But why do people have to be reminded to practise acceptable hygiene? How do they go about this in their private homes? This is why a certain friend of mine has a problem with visitors doing the number 2 in her home. She has a notice explicitly stating that the guest toilet is only for doing the number 1, as she says she will not clean after untidy people. I thought her action was a sign of an obsessive disorder taking root, but she has shrugged off my concerns, saying the rule works for her. This is about literally being left to hold kaka because of people who just saunter out of public toilets without flushing properly after they do the dump. A few days ago, before I saw the sign, I thought that I was exposed to some form of nuclear poisoning when I entered the same toilets. For a semi-second, I couldn’t breathe properly. The toilets are quite small, with just four cubicles, very close to each other. I could not tell which cubicle the odour originated from as I even tried to change toilets, but to no avail. I was just too pressed, otherwise I would have abandoned my mission, so I took a deep breath and held my breathing as I relieved myself quickly. I then ran out more quickly than a dove released from a cage. Only when I was outside did I properly release my breath. The torture was those few minutes spent inside the cubicle. I prayed no one would come into the toilet and was ready to shout the big disclaimer that the stifling odour wasn’t from me. I wasn’t lucky years ago, however, when some thoughtless human put me in a very compromising situation. We were travelling from a weekend work trip in Limpopo with a bunch of reporters from various publications. On arriving back in Johannesburg, a few people badly wanted to use the toilet. Our gracious host directed the bus to his mansion and we rushed to queue for the two toilets on offer. I thought I was the last one in the downstairs queue when someone who had probably indulged in all the freebies that weekend made a big smelly dump and even left some “weet-bix” remnants. Despite a flush or two, the stubborn remnants continued to swim happily in the bowl, nauseating me and refusing to go down. My worst shock when I attempted to rush out of the smelly mess was when my crush stood on the other side of the door. He quickly pinched his nose after I opened. We live in a world where facts and fiction get blurred Who we choose to trust can have a profound impact on our lives.
