Situated on the site of the city’s original railway station, the centre has been a key part of the urban landscape since opening inNow, under new ownership, the shopping complex is preparing for its next chapter through an ambitious three-year redevelopment programme designed to improve the shopping experience and secure the centre’s long-term future.of Golden Acre and Grand Parade Shopping Centre by Putirex and 11 Adderley Properties earlier this year after receiving approval from competition authorities. According to management, the redevelopment will focus on creating a more modern and welcoming environment while enhancing accessibility, customer flow and overall functionality throughout the centre.

“This investment reflects our long-term commitment to the Cape Town CBD and the community that supports us,” mall management said. The upgrades are expected to improve the overall appearance of the centre, create upgraded spaces for shoppers and tenants, and future-proof the property in an increasingly competitive retail environment. Golden Acre remains one of the most strategically located shopping centres in Cape Town, connecting directly with major public transport routes and serving thousands of commuters daily.

Popular retailers at the centre include Shoprite, Ackermans, Foschini, McDonald’s, Wimpy and Steers, alongside a wide range of service providers and fashion outlets. The shopping centre expanded significantly in 2010 when the neighbouring Grand Parade Shopping Centre was incorporated into the complex, adding more than 10 000 square metres of retail space and 22 000 square metres of office accommodation. Construction on the first major phase of the redevelopment began in February and is focused on the Piazza Level.

The work is expected to take approximately one year to complete. Despite the extensive renovations, management has stressed that all trading stores will remain open throughout the process. Updated wayfinding signage has also been installed to help customers navigate construction zones safely. While some disruption is inevitable, management believes the end result will deliver substantial benefits for both shoppers and businesses.

“While there may be some inconvenience along the way, we’re confident the transformation will deliver a significantly enhanced and more vibrant space once complete,” the centre said. Once completed, the upgraded Golden Acre is expected to reinforce its position as one of Cape Town’s most important retail and transport-linked destinations, while offering a modern shopping experience for future generations.
