Canada\u0027s opposition parties and experts are calling for expansion of euthanasia to those with mental disorders in 2023 be delayed.
With the sunset clause set to expire on March 17, 2023, people whose sole underlying medical condition is a mental disorder,
Bloc MP Luc Theriault said the March deadline is “too early” and that he does not have the absolute certainty that everything will be in place to respond to the concerns of the government’s expert panel. The panel’s report, released last May, called for more guidelines and training for doctors who participate in MAID.
“Further time is required to increase awareness of this change and establish guidelines and standards to which clinicians, patients and the public can turn to for more education and information,” said Dr. Valerie Taylor, who heads the group and is also chair of the psychiatry department at the University of Calgary.
That leaves the federal government only one week to decide if it should amend the law to extend the sunset clause.This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below.The Liberal co-chair of the special joint committee, Marc Garneau, said that while he cannot predict what the government’s response will be in the coming months, passing new legislation to extend the sunset clause is something that could happen quickly with the necessary support.
