He's been out of the picture for so long that he slipped my mind completely.
It wasn’t until the Euros began in Germany and I saw him representing his country that I remembered Ianis Hagi is still actually a Rangers player. He’s been out of the picture for so long, out injured for a year then sent on loan to Alaves in Spain last summer, that he slipped my mind completely.
But he obviously worked his socks off over the summer because he looked so much sharper and stronger when the pre-season stuff began. That told me a great deal about his strength of character and his desire to get back wearing a Rangers shirt. Clement will certainly have been paying attention and it will be interesting to see what the manager has in mind for Hagi’s next step. Does he cash in on a player whose value will have shot up? Or does he see a player there who is ready-made to step into his own team?
I’m sure no one will be more frustrated about it than chairman John Bennett but I must say take my hat off to him for the way he’s gone about trying to address it. As soon as he realised the scale of the problem he moved quickly to meet it head on. He didn’t hum and haw or try to pull the wool over anyone’s eyes. He was honest with the supporters and he promised to rectify it as soon as possible.
The job is still the same. You have to go out there and win, no matter where you’re asked to do it. That said, I can see why Hampden might be the club’s first choice because it probably makes more sense for the supporters.
