'An award can be a poisoned chalice.'
, Cole has racked up a couple of Best Actor awards at both the Beijing International Film Festival and the British Independent Film Awards.'s Atwell not only has an Ian Charleson Award under her belt, she has also has been nominated for Best Actress numerous times, including for the Laurence Olivier Awards and the Golden Globes.
It's great fun. It's a hell of a lot of work but ultimately, if it doesn't land with an audience, it doesn't land and that's why the [judges] of this award are the audience themselves, because they're going:"We're seeing it reflected… We're seeing our stories reflected back on our screens." It's something that I always used to look at when I was a young actor, and think:"That would be nice."Why was being part of the judging process something that was really important to you?It felt like an honour to be asked. It was an opportunity to watch a load of up-and-coming talent, and see a load of new movies, and see what's being made, and to be part of the conversation in some way and, you know, somebody's got to choose them.
The other thing that's tricky is that I think art is subjective – and it's really unfair to pit people against each other, and to say:"This is better than that." Which is a very sort of reductive and overly simplistic way of looking at an awards ceremony. But I can see why we think that, and why it affects us in that way.
I don't feel nervous. I feel very much like I get a chance here to give back, and to be of service, and to help support and nurture and give a platform to talent.People are incredibly talented and hardworking, and yet there are lots of facets that go into a career taking off and being successful. James McAvoy, back in the day, and, more recently, people like Letitia Wright and John Boyega and Jack O'Connell and Tom Holland, I think, and Will Poulter.
