'An award can be a poisoned chalice'

BAFTA Rising Star judges Joe Cole and Hayley Atwell know a thing or two about award ceremonies and the hard work that goes into being in a position to be nominated., Cole has racked up a couple of Best Actor awards at both the Beijing International Film Festival and the British Independent Film Awards.

It's great fun. It's a hell of a lot of work but ultimately, if it doesn't land with an audience, it doesn't land and that's why the [judges] of this award are the audience themselves, because they're going,"We're seeing it reflected… We're seeing our stories reflected back on our screens. Yeah and as I said before, I think it's a fantastic award – a prestigious award – and something that I think any young actor would love to receive or be nominated for. It's an honour to be able to be part of the team choosing them.An award can be a poisoned chalice, I think, in that it's wonderful that the support is there, the recognition is there, the nurturing is there but it's what you do with that award, and whether that feeds your ego, or that makes you go,"Brilliant.

What was it like working with the other judges to come up with a list that you were all quite happy with?Yeah. I'm nervous. No, I'm excited. I've got a couple of favourites. I think it's going to be really tough. There's so many great people this year. It's not going to be easy picking five, but we'll get there.Hayley:
