Norah Martin walks along Queen St. E. every day on her way to work.
Last week, the Beaches resident noticed two young men outside a building, near Queen and Bellefair Ave. — one on a ladder and one on the sidewalk — taking down a nest full of baby birds.“I asked them what they’d do with the birds, and they said they’d be euthanized,” said Martin in a recent interview. “They also said, ‘If you want to take them, go ahead.’ So I did.”
Martin is quick to say she’s not any kind of experienced animal rescuer— although she has caught and resuscitated a budgie and a squirrel in the past — but she wasn’t going to stand by and let the birds die.Martin took the baby birds home. The Apple-certified IT tech specialist doesn’t use social media, but with the help of friends, she posted about the pigeons and was connected with a group called Shades of Hope, a wildlife refuge in Pefferlaw.
“You have to deal with this before there’s a nest with babies in it. Or you can relocate it — there’s a park right across the street from there.”Share this article in your social network
