A special avalanche warning is in effect for western Canada heading into the upcoming weekend, lasting until end of day on May 1, 2023.

A dramatic increase in temperatures is expected to destabilize the snowpack, creating the potential for dangerous and destructive avalanches, Avalanche Canada said in a statement issued Thursday. The warning is in effect immediately and will remain in place through the end of Monday.Sign up to receive daily headline news from the Calgary SUN, a division of Postmedia Network Inc.By clicking on the sign up button you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc.

“Dangerous avalanche conditions exist for all mountainous regions in Western Canada and the hazard increases with each day of warm air,” Mike Conlan, a senior avalanche forecaster with Avalanche Canada, said in the release. “Regions with persistent or deep persistent slab avalanche problems will be especially problematic, with avalanches potentially involving the full depth of the snowpack.”
