NEWARK — Authorities on Friday night released new details about a

earlier this month in Newark, as well as the names of the man who was killed and the officers who were involved. In a statement, the Newark Police Department identified the man as Elmer Lopez-Castaneda, 19, of Newark. The officers were identified as Newark police Agent Trevor Damewood, Fremont police Detective Anthony Piol, Fremont police Detective Jesse Hartman and Fremont police Agent Thomas Degenstein. Damewood and Degenstein each have five years of service and Piol and Hartman each have 11 years of service, police said.Lopez-Castaneda, who was wanted in connection with an armed carjacking, was found in the carjacked vehicle with another person around 4:45 p.m., according to the statement.

When officers went to arrest Lopez-Castaneda, they saw what appeared to be a gun in his waistband. Police said Lopez-Castaneda ignored officers’ commands and “withdrew the perceived firearm.” The officers then opened fire, killing Lopez-Castaneda.The firearm turned out to be a “full metal Airsoft replica of a Beretta M9 pistol,” according to the statement. Police provided a similar description of the gun in a statement earlier this month.
