Avery Pickle, 17, a high school senior at Elberta High School
The death of a 17-year-old Elberta High School student on the Fourth of July was likely from an accidental drowning, and that there is “nothing to suggest foul play,” a lead investigator with the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Department said.
Captain Nathan Lusk, Investigations Command with the Sheriff’s Department, said the agency is aware of “a lot of speculation on social media” about the circumstances surrounding the death of Avery Pickle, whose body was recovered Friday from a creek. Lusk said an autopsy was scheduled for Monday, and that the agency is waiting for the finished report. The complete autopsy report is pending toxicology, Lusk said.
“Right now, based on preliminary investigations, this appears to be an accidental drowning and there is nothing to suggest foul play led to his death,” Lusk said, adding that an investigation continues., was last seen swimming on Thursday in Palmetto Creek. Frist responders, search and rescue and volunteers conducted searches throughout the area, which resulted in the body being discovered a day later.
A picture has circulated on Facebook that is purported to have been taken on Thursday showing Pickle among a group of people swimming in the creek. Pickle’s mother, in a heart-wrenching post that has since been deleted, accused some of the youths in the picture of lying to authorities about the circumstances his death and for observing the search without providing information as to what happened.
