Arsenal look much more like serious title contenders. Unlike the last few seasons when Liverpool and Manchester City have dominated the English Premiership
Although the Gunners saw their seven-point lead cut by two points this week when they were held to a goalless draw at Newcastle United, while their main chasers – City – managed a good victory at Chelsea, Mikel Arteta’s side are looking much more like serious title contenders than they have for a long time.
This weekend Arteta will not be needing to look at the league table as attention turns to the FA Cup third round, with the stand-out match between Chelsea and City. The last time Chelsea were beaten in the third round was in the 1997/8 season when United won 5-3 in London. It is a record they share with United, although the Manchester club missed the FA Cup one season through Club World Cup commitments. That was in 2000, when Quinton Fortune scored both goals in United’s only victory in the competition – a 2-0 win against South Melbourne of Australia.
