Armed response units attended the scene on Hindley Road in Westhoughton on Thursday morning and enquiries continue today

Armed officers swopped on Hindley Road in Westhoughton at around 11am on Thursday after a 'gunman' reportedly targeted a Post Office. No injuries were reported.

It is believed no cash was taken after the offender was 'startled by the activation of the alarm', police said. No arrests have been made so far and enquiries are continuing.Detective Sergeant Neil Moss, of Bolton’s CID, said: "I understand the concern this will raise in the local community, but I can reassure residents that we are investigating this crime with all the resources available to us.

"Either way it is a distressing incident, and we are determined to find the person responsible. We have an early distinctive description that the suspect was wearing full blue overalls with a grey hooded jumper underneath. "I would encourage anyone in the local area who saw something or has any dashcam or doorbell footage of someone acting suspicious to please get in touch in full confidence, as any bit of detail could be the breakthrough we need.

"Anyone with information that may help detectives with their enquiries are asked to call 0161 856 5757 direct or anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 quoting incident 1351 of 07/09/2023."
