A long frost-free season gives Cowichan Valley winegrowers a more extensive selection of grapes to choose from
Vancouver Island wines are beginning to make an impact on the B.C. wine map as the region closes in on two decades of production. It’s tiny at 3.5 to four per cent of all the wine made in the province, but size isn’t all that important in the site-driven world of wine where place matters.
I mention the Pinot Noir first because it’s the kind of grape that can change the entire perception of a region. Islanders seem to love their hybrids, including a very herby Cabernet-Libre, but its hardly the future of Vancouver Island wine. Island Pinot Noir has already attracted internationals looking for land and wineries.
I don’t get to taste many Vancouver Island wines regularly in Vancouver, so I have been spending more time on the island meeting producers and tasting the latest and I have to say I’m impressed with the quality level. The trick for the moment is finding island wines in Vancouver because most of them are bought on the island by a very enthusiastic public and trade. What it really means is you will need to plan a wine buying trip to Vancouver Island this year and the sooner, the better.
If you are wondering what all the noise is about here is short list of wines to seek out today. There are many more to come: Unsworth Vineyards Reserve Pinot Noir, Averill Creek Somenos Series Pinot Noir, Blue Grouse Estate Ortega, Unsworth Vineyards Rosé, Unsworth Vineyards Allegro, Enrico Petit Milo, Emandare Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc, Blue Grouse Estate Pinot Noir, Unsworth Vineyards Charme De L’ile, Rathjen Cellars Pinot Noir and Rocky Creek Blackberry Wine, Good hunting.$29.
